Review of 44th Annual Irish Antique Dealers Fair 2009.

Over 30 Members of the Irish Antique Dealers Association exhibited their finest wares from collectibles to iconic Irish pieces. Strict vetting and date lines applied, as always. Throughout this, our premier event, our Members presented antiques as very good value and as fine investments.

For the first time the IADA, in collaboration with the Interiors Association, presented an exhibition spectacular offering a wonderful view of antiques in a modernistic setting. This was a very popular must see for all.

A live Restoration Project was on view throughout the duration of the Fair. Daly Antique Services restored an 18th C Irish Mahogany Tallboy, supplied by Johnston Antiques of Francis St, Dublin. The 18th century Tallboy was in very neglected condition but luckily had not been tampered with by ‘non-experts’ during its’ 200 plus year history. Over the duration of the 5 day Fair the staff of Daly Antique Services took the Tallboy apart into its component pieces, repaired all the joints and bracket feet, patched damaged veneers, re-assembled the piece and polished it back to its former glory. This fascinating exercise attracted huge interest from the crowds attending the fair. Daly Antique Services were also delighted to answer the multitude of interesting questions posed by the audience.

Mr. Robert O’Byrne, former Fine Art correspondent for the Irish Times, launch his critically acclaimed book ‘ Romantic Irish Homes’ which was available for viewing and purchase at the Fair.

A Valuation Day was held when IADA members were available to conduct appraisals and valuations for members of the public.

Antique Lecture Series

There was a series of well attended Lectures throughout the Fair.

Review of the Irish Antique Dealers Association Antiques Roadshow at Farmleigh

5th / 6th July 2009

The Irish Antique Dealers Association Antiques Roadshow, organised in conjunction with the Office of Public Works at Farmleigh in the Phoenix Park, Dublin on 5th / 6th July 2009, was a huge success with large flow of people bringing in objects for identification and valuation by the IADA experts. A large number of objects were brought along. The following are examples of some of the fascinating objects discovered:

A wonderful painted play box done specially for James Stephens 1880 – 1950, the poet and storyteller and his sister Iris. This box was decorated for them, when they were children, by an American artist Long John Reilly. The box was decorated with fairies, elves, mushrooms etc.

A linen handkerchief designed by John B Yeats which was produced in 1913 to sell at one dollar each in aid of the proposed Hugh Lane Gallery Dublin fund raising campaign. The handkerchief includes images of the lead players of the time and Lady Gregory etc. There is also an image of the cast of Shaw’s play ‘The Shewing-up of Blanco Posnet.’

John Enright of Castleconnell is perhaps one of the forgotten Champions of Ireland.
A collection of his medals were shown. He was a maker of fishing rods which were world famous and World Champion fly caster in 1896.

Postcards relating to 1916 and 1922 periods in Ireland are highly sought after and a complete collection of these were shown.

A wonderful Bristol delft plate circa 1680 was brought in by a member of the public. It was very rare as it bore a portrait of William III, 1650 – 1702. Sadly this plate had been broken some years ago.It had been glued back together, rather crudely, but because of it’s rarity is still worth approximately €2,000. In perfect condition it would probably be worth in the region of €10,000.

The Ardagh Chalice is one of the treasures of Ireland and a very good copy of this was bought to be valued. Also an exceptional London George II toilet box dated 1748. An interesting silver regimental cup was produced that had been saved from the skip, the cup was supported by three rifles by Barnard of London 1860. The owner intends presenting it to the Regiment that originally had it.

Next Roadshow

The next opportunity to consult the Irish Antique Dealers Association experts at an Antiques Roadshow will be in Limerick later in 2010. Watch our Website for further details.

For further details contact Niall Mullen @ 01 453 8948 or George Stacpoole @ 061 396409
