Ronald McDonnell Bursary

Applications are invited for the Ronald McDonnell bursary.

The Ronald McDonnell Bursary is awarded every September. The Bursary was founded by Ronald and Doreen McDonnell. Ronnie McDonnell was a highly important dealer in Dublin from the 1950′s onwards, 4th generation, he had a magnificent shop in Kildare Street. They specialised in 18th Century Irish furniture, rare objects and the shop had an international reputation. He was the founding President of the Irish Antique Dealers Assocation. After retirement Mealy’s sold the contents of their shop and home in a spectacular sale in the late 1980′s at the Royal Hospital Kilmanham.

After his death in 1993, Doreen McDonnell handed over Tara’s Palace to a board of Trustees along with many wonderful articles to various great houses and museums which can still be seen today.

The Ronald McDonnell Bursary has been awarded through the IADA since1995. The objective of the Bursary is to assist an Irish craftsperson of exceptional talent and commitment to undertake a specialised or advanced skill course at home or abroad to further their skill, study or career. The Bursary is worth €2,500. The areas of the Bursary cover a wide variety of advanced skills applicable to conservation and restoration of art objects in wood, stone, marble, parquetry, needlework and tapestry, porcelain, glass, paper and similar specialised skills.

Since the foundation of the Bursary, it has been awarded to a gilder, bookbinder, textile restorer, paper conservator, and ceramic & related materials restorers.
