Good heavy quality Batchelor’s set, each piece with plain hemi spherical body, central ribbed band surround and curvilinear handles to creamer and sugar; composite handle and finial to tea pot. Tea pot and creamer hallmarked for London 1926 E.J. Lowe; sugar 1938 Jones &amp; Son. Tea pot measures 8.00 (handle to spout) x 5.00 x 3.75 inches (height to top of handle). Sugar: 5.00 (handle to handle) x 2.50 inches (height). Creamer: 4.125 (handle to spout); Height: 1.80 inches (to top of handle). All fully hallmarked, including interior of cover to tea pot and wing nut to finial. Gross weight: 689 grams. Condition: Good. Reflections purely from photography only.</p>

										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hester Bateman Georgian Silver Teapot and stand London 1788. Accompanied by a rare silver stand, elegant plain teapot, with its oval, straight-bodied shape and composite handle and finial, with upper and lower bead border. Oval stand hand engraved decorations to the unusual, pierced skirt around the base stand and bead borders, interior of stand wood with silver boss to centre. Teapot engraved beautifully with armorials surmounted with greyhound courant, the stand also engraved with greyhound courant. Length: (handle to spout tip) 10.625 inches. Height: approximately 6.25 inches. Gross weight: 606 grams. (19.5 oz). Condition: Minor age-related wear to hinge and a couple of very minor dints, stand hall marks rubbed because of position on rim but discernible, full hall marks on base of teapot and maker’s mark and lion passant on interior of cover clear. Reflections purely from photography only.</p>
<p>Hester Bateman regarded as the “Queen of the English Silversmiths. Entering her first silver mark in 1761 after the death of her husband John, Bateman was one of the best known of London’s female silversmiths in the 18th century. Building the company with the help of her children and their spouses, Bateman produced items of exquisite beauty and delicacy until her retirement in 1790, and her business continued to flourish into the early 1800s.</p>

					<description><![CDATA[Georgian Silver Vinaigrette very small in size Joseph Willmore Birmingham 1814]]></description>
										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Georgian Silver Vinaigrette very small in size Joseph Willmore Birmingham 1814. Half the size of most vinaigrettes. Octagonal shaped, the cover is engraved with flowers and prick work surround, vacant centre, the base simple foliate centre engraving. Plain pierced silver gilt grille, indicative of early grilles. The interior gilding and hallmarks are excellent. including JW makers mark in circular serrated punch, his first mark used between 1797 and 1834. Joseph Willmore, who worked between 1797 and 1843, is described by Eric Delieb as &#8220;a superlative silversmith, who produced some of the finer vinaigrette shapes, with quality embellishment, he was preoccupied with fine workmanship&#8221; &#8211; Silver Boxes, page 118. Measures: 2.30 x 1.6 x 0.5 cm. Weight: 5.56 grams. Condition: Good, no repairs, tight hinge closures, good hallmarks to interior of cover, base and importantly the grille. Reflections purely from photography only.</p>
<p>A vinaigrette was intended to hold a tiny sponge dipped in aromatic vinegar. The interior is gilded to protect the silver from oxidation caused by the acidity of the vinegar. A hinged pierced inner lid or grille kept the soaked sponge in place. It may have been used to revive someone from a fainting spell. The maker of this vinaigrette, Joseph Willmore, was probably the most diverse manufacturer of &#8220;smallware&#8221; in Birmingham during the first half of the 19<sup>th</sup> century. He registered his mark at the Birmingham Assay Office as a snuff-box maker in 1808 and continued to register marks until 1843. His death in 1855 brought an end to the Willmore connection with silversmithing which had begun with his grandfather Thomas in 1773. As well as having premises in Birmingham, Joseph Willmore had a showroom in London. He was described as a gold and silversmith and patent snuffer maker.</p>
