Arts Crafts Sterling Tea Strainer, Emmy Roth, Germany C.1920. The hammered silver strainer of plain square form with curvilinear stylised handle. Full marks to reverse. Measures: 4.75 x 3.00 x 1.00 inches. Weight: 66.50 grams. Emmy Roth [Hattingen 1885 – 1942 Tel Aviv] her style evolved from richly decorated small appliances through an expressionist modernist style to a simple, Bauhaus influenced style. Born into a Jewish merchant family of the educated middle class, she studied in Dusseldorf, Berlin and Paris. She founded her own workshop in Charlottenburg in Berlin around 1910 and was active there until 1933. She enjoyed a steady patronage until the rise of the National Socialists in 1933. As a Jewish artist she was forced to flee and worked for a period in France and the Netherlands designing for the Zilverfabriek Voorschoten before settling permanently in Tel Aviv in 1939. She died in 1942.
