Rare Antique Silver Toothpick Holder, Rio de Janeiro Brazil C.1850. The holder in the form of an exotic bird surmounted on bud flower foliage branches on knopped stem in turn on circular pierced foliage and wriggle work base on three turned knuckle feet supports. Marks in base for Rio de Janeiro Brazil. Disposable wooden toothpicks were introduced in the early 19th century; figural holders to display the toothpicks on the table became popular in Continental Europe, particularly in Portugal, Brazil and Italy.
