Description

Very fine English silver gilt large goblet feast cup and cover or communal chalice, London 1879 Alexander Crichton. Decorated in Art Nouveau aesthetic period taste with wonderful embossed and chased decoration and the image of Dionysus/Bacchus, God of Wine; the cover surmounted with a winged figure. Height: 12 inches. Diameter: 5 inches. Total Weight: 528 grams. Crichton, a renowned silversmith whose whimsy is seen in some of the finest English silver of the period, and is thought to be based on the drawings of Sir John Tenniel for Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. The earliest known piece from his workshop, was sold by Hamilton Crichton & Co. of Edinburgh. Crichton’s first known major work is an 1878 pair of parcel-gilt shields based on Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Crichton’s mark was registered at the Goldsmiths Hall in November.
